History Club Win County Award

On Thursday 6th June - the Wyvern History Club were invite to the Fountains Community Cafe to receive and celebrate their winning first place in the Hampshire Archives Trust Schools' History Award. The ceremony coincided with the opening of the Fair Oak and Horton Heath Parish Council D-Day Exhibition.

The students were supported by club leader Sam McNay, History Curriculum Leader, Tom Langdon and Chair to the Trustees, Lynda Smith. There to meet the children was leader of the Parish Council and Chair of the college Member Committee, Helen Douglas and Parish Clerk Mel Stephens. Dr Alistair Dougall from the Hampshire Archive Trustee presented the award.

The project undertaken by the History Club was called "When You Were Me" and was aimed at celebrating local history. The project seeks to foster connections across different generations, combat loneliness, and inspire young people to explore the history of their area. The central activity was a coffee morning in December, where a group of older residents met with our students and shared their stories of the local area, which the students recorded. The students' project was exhibited alongside the displays celebrating the contribution of other local residents to the D-Day mission. One such person was Lydia Alford, one of the first members of the nursing corps that landed in Normandy ready to treat casualties. Her nieces where there on the day and able to share their memories of their amazing aunt.

As an added bonus, all the students and Wyvern staff were given a drink and a piece of one of the Fountains' fabulous cake.

Congratulations to Mrs McNay and all the History Club members.
